Voices of the Earth - A human mandala
In a world characterized by overlapping climate, economic, and political crises, Voices of the Earth poses a seemingly unremarkable but radical question: how do we truly relate to the Earth? Not as we are told, but as we actually feel, remember, and experience that connection?
This participatory performance, created and performed by Maia Steinberg, draws on years of artistic research across various cultures, collecting songs and stories that reflect the relationship between humanity and the earth in contexts of migration, oppression, resilience, and interconnectedness. Instead of prescribing 'green' behavior, the work invites something more intimate: a shared, embodied experience of memory and meaning.
A small group of approximately 10 spectators is guided to create a human mandala together using long woolen threads, resulting in a living scenography that makes interdependence physically tangible. Within this shared structure, Steinberg performs songs from diverse traditions, interwoven with movement, narration, soundscapes, and projections.
The mandala becomes a symbol of a fragile collective balance: each participant holds a thread, and if someone shifts or lets go, the entire structure changes. Responsibility is shared. Presence has consequences. Towards the end, the representation describes an arc from individual disorientation to collective resonance. This demonstrates that ecological care is not an abstract obligation, but something rooted in our stories, our bodies, and each other.
