Stemmen uit de wijk - Kunstmin Dordrecht
' Voices from the Neighborhood ' is a participatory theater and music project developed together with residents of Dordrecht, the Zangbuurt Dordrecht group (a group of neighborhood residents who come together to sing and share songs from different cultures and musical tastes), and with support from Kunstmin.
Central to the project are the stories, memories, experiences, and voices of the participants themselves. Over several weeks, participants from different parts of Dordrecht came together during conversations, workshops, and musical encounters to reflect on their relationship with the city, guided by community artist and musician Maia Steinberg. Some were born in Dordrecht, some came here as refugees, and others moved to the city from other places. This creates a rich mix of generations, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
The project continues Kunstmin's tradition of participatory neighborhood and city projects, but shifts the focus from the neighborhood itself to the people who shape the city with their daily lives and stories.
Music forms the heart of the performance. Singing together plays a connecting role, both during the creative process and in the presentation itself. The performance combines music, storytelling, poetry, video, and audience participation. A poem by Marieke van Leeuwen is recited, guest musicians can be heard, and an original song about Dordrecht, written by Ton van der Kolk, is accompanied by a live band with percussion, guitar, and keyboard/piano.
' Voices from the Neighborhood ' invites the audience not only to listen, but also to sing along and become part of a collective experience in which the boundaries between performer and audience slowly blur. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to join the Zangbuurt group (don't expect a traditional choir!) and celebrate together the many voices that make Dordrecht the city it is.
