Werksessie #4: What role can art play in times of war?

Welke rol kunnen kunstenaars spelen in de intens onrechtvaardige en gewelddadige oorlog in Oekraïne? Onder leiding van Merlijn Twaalfhoven en Liesbeth Bik gaan we in verschillende groepen aan de slag met thema’s die voortkwamen uit eerdere sessies. De voertaal is Engels.

In reactie op de oorlog in Oekraïne zien we symbolische acties die troost en steun kunnen bieden. Maar er is meer mogelijk. Kunst kan polariserende en misleidende (zij)verhalen afremmen, vormen van verbondenheid met vluchtelingen bieden en andere vragen stellen die ons tot nieuwe manieren van denken kunnen brengen. En we kunnen vandaag al aan de slag met wederopbouw. De Akademie van Kunsten organiseert werksessies om hierover samen na te denken en te werken aan concrete uitkomsten. 

Vragen die richting geven aan de sessies:

Wat is de rol van kunst in tijden waarin mensen letterlijk in levensgevaar verkeren?
Welke andere rol kan kunst spelen in de oorlog in Oekraïne? 
Wat kunnen kunstenaars in Nederland, Europa en de wereld betekenen in deze intens onrechtvaardige en gewelddadige oorlog?
Hoe kunnen we niet alleen onze afschuw en woede uiten, maar ook complexe emoties delen?
Hoe kunnen de inzichten en kennis uit de kunstpraktijk hun weg vinden naar plekken waar beslissingen worden genomen, zoals de politiek en de mainstream media?
En, last but not least, hoe weten we zo zeker dat kunst macht heeft? En hoe kunnen we kunstenaars laten inzien dat ze machtiger zijn dan ze denken?

De werksessies zijn openbaar en specifiek bedoeld voor kunstenaars uit alle kunstdisciplines, vertegenwoordigers van kunstinstellingen en van beleidsorganen in de kunst- en cultuursector.

In de werksessies delen deelnemers hun kennis en kunde, met als doel vragen en aandachtspunten te destilleren die tijdens vervolgbijeenkomsten besproken worden.

Alle deelnemers worden uitgenodigd om mee te werken aan concrete voorstellen die leiden tot realisatie en doelen, zoals een symposium, theaterstuk, vertelsessies, expertmeetings met partners, presentatie/pitches van beleidsplannen etc.

We gaan aan de slag met twee thema's die uit eerdere sessies kwamen:

Geschiedenis? Geconstrueerde en betwiste verhalen
Wat hebben we nodig? Concreet beleid: urgenties en hindernissen, coördinatie van kennis, financiën en financiering, communicatie en betrokkenheid van deelnemers, mentoren enz.
We vragen de deelnemers van elk van deze groepen om zich voor te bereiden op 21 oktober, vanuit hun eigen en collectieve expertise en ervaring.

In deze vierde sessie gaan we eerst in twee kleine groepen aan de slag. Daarna brengt elke groep de bevindingen en gewenste richtingen naar de tafel en bespreken we wat nodig is om dit te bereiken.

What role can artists play in the plainly unjust and violent war in Ukraine? We see symbolic actions that offer comfort and support, but more is possible. Art can slow down polarising and misleading stories and histories, offer forms of connection to refugees, and ask questions that can lead us to new ways of thinking. And we can start working on reconstruction today.

To think about this together, the Society of Arts is organising a series of working sessions in which our aim is to produce concrete outcomes. 

Questions that guide us in these sessions are:

What is the role of art at a time when people are literally in mortal danger?
What other role can art play in the war in Ukraine? 
How can artists in the Netherlands, Europe and the world take meaningful action in this plainly unjust and violent war?
How can we not only express our disgust and anger, but also share complex emotions?
How can the insights and knowledge of artistic practice find their way to places where decisions are made, such as politics and mainstream media? 
And, last but not least: How are we so sure that art has power? And how can we make artists realise that they are more powerful than they think? 

The working sessions are public and intended specifically for artists from across the artistic disciplines and for representatives of art institutions and policy bodies in the arts and culture sector.

Participants in the working sessions share their knowledge and skills with the aim of distilling questions and points of concern that will be discussed during follow-up meetings. 

All participants are invited to commit to developing concrete proposals that should lead to the attainment of specific goals, for example a symposium, theatre piece, storytelling sessions, expert meetings with partners, or presentations/pitches of policy plans. 

The point of departure will be two groups formed in the earlier working sessions. 

History? Constructed and contested  narratives
What do we need? Concrete policies: urgency and obstacles, coordination of knowledge, finance and funding, communication and engagement of participants, mentors, and so on
We invite the participants of each group to prepare for the  session based on their own and collective expertise and experience. After meeting in two smaller groups, there will be a plenary session in which each group presents its findings and recommendations and advises on what is needed to achieve them. 

Merlijn Twaalfhoven and Liesbeth Bik will supervise the working session.
